Came across this bike and though I would share it., I’ve been researching monstercross bikes lately and this one caught my eye. U.P. (Unbeaten Path) by Open Cycle http://www.opencycle.com/blogs/article/introducing-up
“To go anywhere, the U.P. fits tires up to 55mm wide. But wider tires are also taller, which affects the steering geometry. I’ve just pulled the trigger on one. Will be building it around 650b x 2.1 wheels with Ultegra. Pretty pumped to see where this thing takes me. Should be a few weeks until everything comes in.

First ride today on the new Open Cycles U.P. Suffice it to say, my mind is blown. It’s even better than I could have ever imagined. Such a quality, well engineered, ride. It was great everywhere and I just wanted to go further and explore all day on it. I have 650 x 2.1 Schwalbe Thunder Burts on there now and they were great on pretty much everything except in the wet. On the gravel and hard-pack they were killer. Racing Ralph would have been ideal but things should dry up this week and i’ll be golden.
@matty-f helped me build it this weekend and he did an amazing job, it performed flawlessly. I was a bit worried about the fit but it’s spot on. I felt super comfy on it.

Beauty @fasttimes, glad you are stoked on your new ride! Curious to know what the ride ‘feel’ is like compared to your Jake the Snake on the gravel sections.

I love the Jake but it is a harsh ride. This bike feels stiffer (laterally) yet still much more compliant and forgiving. The interchangeability between wheels was the draw for me. Being able to toss the wheels from my Tallboy or 5010 on this bike is amazing. I can go from 700 x 28c-40c to 650 x 2.1 and have the best of both. Not that I ride much road but it holds it’s on there as well. On the trails and gravel though, it’s just nuts.
Not that is matters, but I PR’ed 4 segments (from our bikepacking ride) today, just cruising. It does give me a way to quantify what I felt riding the bike however. I have done that ride on 3 different bikes, including the JTS with 700 x 32c. It honestly just felt effortless and smooth on the Open. One of the most enjoyable rides I have ever had to be honest. When Open formed as a brand I really didn’t like their offerings. But this frame is spot on, and a great build to boot. Thunderburt tires are perfect on this sled, and hydraulic Shimano road discs are beyond outstanding. Plus, a full Thomson cockpit? Yes please.April 13, 2016 at 11:46 pm #810101

Thanks @poo_head I originally wanted a 1x setup. Sram Force 22 was the front runner. In a perfect world I would run the Shimano XTR Di2 & Road Di2 Shifters combo. It’s been documented a few times but the cost was too high.
Given that this will be a gravel grinder / bikepacking bike, I decided that the range of a 2x was the better choice for me given the intended use. I also wanted something that could be repaired easily trail side. The above setup still looks like a bit of a hack to me with potential bugs. It may be bombproof but I don’t want to be dead in the water on some huge ride in the middle of nowhere. This mechanical Ultegra build is pretty killer for me needs.
I will check out that pulley you linked to. That would be a cool option with a single Wolftooth front ring if it works.April 14, 2016 at 9:32 am #810111

@fasttimes aside from the potential for ‘mechanical’ issue you mentioned with Di2 while out in the wilds the other issue I found when riding a Di2 equipped bike (with the road shifters) was that with thicker gloves, which one would often have in the shoulder seasons when these bikes have traditionally been more popular, I had a difficult time ‘feeling’ the shift buttons.
What I mean is that the shift buttons are so close together with thicker gloves I lost the ability to feel the proper button. With thinner gloves, or bare hands, it was easier to feel the difference as one of the buttons is dimpled. I found myself struggling to push the proper button in many case not actually shifting because I was pushing both at the same time. That being said I can’t knock the shifting performance of Di2, the downfall for me was the combination of bulky gloves with the diminutive shift buttons.April 14, 2016 at 8:03 pm #810118
I am extremely skeptical of that Wolftooth Tanpan thing. I could explain it myself, but a fellow I know summed it up nicely in another forum:
“Mmmmm. I haven’t used one of those or seen one in the shop, but I doubt their efficacy. Shimano’s cable pulls aren’t just different from road to mountain, but each pull can be different than the adjacent ones. The goal is to get the lever feel the same across the whole cassette, and have the most consistent shifting performance possible. Spring forces follow 1/2 kx where k is the spring constant, and x is the amount the spring is deflected (in meters). So, necessarily, as you deflect a spring more, it pushes back harder. There are also differences in parallelogram geometry at play as well.
Presumably Shimano models all this when they’re designing a drivetrain system, and accounts for it in their shifters. Modelling this after the fact, at a garage engineering outfit, is simply impossible to match exactly. Furthermore, unless Shimano’s four different shift systems covered by the Lindarets part all have the same cable pull progression, and just have it scaled for different systems, which I highly doubt, there’s no way this product can work.
IF Shimano just scales the same shift progression between road and mountain (doubtful), a simple dual pulley system could work. If NOT, and the progression is different as well as overall scaling, the pulleys would need to each be elliptical in different ways. That anyone, let alone a garage outfit, could derive this behavior without access to design documents, is simply unimaginable.
The product might work acceptably in fringe cases, it might not. I wouldn’t get it unless I was prepared to throw the money away.”April 14, 2016 at 11:11 pm #810120
What sets this bike apart from all the other carbon CX/gravel bikes out there? I fell in love with a Salsa Warbird last demo day and couldn’t tell you why. I buy bike son paint job alone pretty much because I have a hard time telling small differences apart.
And about that tan pan shifter-ration mechanism… I thought Shimano rear mechs all used the same pull ratio? I just hooked up a Sora 8sp rear shifter to an Acera 7sp derailleur and barely had to adjust the barrel nut!
