    Hi all,
New member here. Had a trailside chat with Marc a couple of weeks ago and he directed me to the website.
Nice to know there is some trail advocacy/stewardship going on.
Saturday, I did some garbage picking in a portion of the trail between The Queensway and Dundas. I was going to submit a post prior to see if anyone else was interested but I couldn’t pin down a date/time this time around.
Anyway, I managed to remove 6 garbage bags of recyclables and garbage in a relatively short stretch of trail. Amazing how much garbage is in there now that the foliage is no longer hiding it. I will try to get in there at least a couple of more times.
I don’t know anyone here, but if anyone was thinking of doing any trail maintenance/ garbage removal etc. I would definitely be willing to help.
I live in the south end very close to the Lake and usually start rides from the QEW entrance.

    Welcome to RFG @allantats!

Thanks for you efforts in the Creek sadly they are much needed due to the amount of trash in there. I would be happy to lend a hand on future endeavors just post up.

I am also an E Creek local. I live right near the QEW entrance to the trails. We will have to hook up for a ride sometime.

Glad you found your way to the site. Lots of great people here.

FastTimes, a spring cleanup day is a good idea. I’ll keep an eye on postings.

Fietser, we should hook up for a ride sometime…just out of curiosity do many ride the west side of the creek from QEW- Dundas?
I have a hard time getting through some of the off camber stuff etc. I’m not sure if the trail has been kind of “let go” in favour of using the east side or maybe just my lack of skills. lol

Hey @allantats I tend to ride the East side up from the QEW but will switch it up from time to time. Agreed that the off camber stuff on the West side is a bit more of a challenge. I think that side sees a lot less traffic and as a result is a little more raw – truth be told I am not super keen on riding through the off leash dog park, had a few interesting encounters. If I am tight for time though I will often ride North on the West side and South on the East side to make a short loop (rather than heading all the way to the Northern section of the Creek.) With the weather this time of year it is a little hit and miss but we do have rides on Weds nights – not sure if @fasttimes mentioned that ( https://www.ridingfeelsgood.com/topic/weekly-west-side-rides-2/page/14/ ). But most guys are game to ride whenever given some notice.

Speaking of the West side, there seems to be much more trash as you get North of the dog park – haven’t actually been on the stretch in a while since we usually duck out at the dog park entrance but from what I remember it looked a little more like a dump sit then a pristine ravine.

If you had to target an area as ‘the worst’ where do you think the focus should be?

I actually haven’t been on the west side much at all as I find I have to walk a couple of the sections and it doesn’t flow very well for me, so I don’t actually know where the worst parts would be.
I was picking the east side north of the railway tracks where there is a scrap yard of sorts right trailside.
Lots of garbage in there that was definitely attributable to the yard. Plenty of 4L anti-freeze jugs, tractor trail oil filters etc.
Next time I’m riding I’ll keep an eye as to what needs the most attention.

Okay @allantats we are on the same page. I would really like to see the trash contributors held to account for their actions. It doesn’t take a detective to trace back more of that trash. Antifreeze jugs and oil filter right outside a distribution center full of transport trucks… shocking that this sort of thing is allowed to continue.

I think this is an area that could certainly use some attention. On it.

Yeah, I was going to e-mail Councillor Grimes about that place. I’m not even sure what company it is but they should be held accountable. Whether that means building a fence across the back of their yard stopping the flow of garbage etc. I’m not sure.

I was talking g to a fella that heads up an annual spring cleanup of our local park (Sam Smith). I asked who his city contact was for garbage removal/dumping. He was unwilling to give out his contact but passed my info to him and asked that he contact me regarding cleanup of Etobicoke Creek. Not holding my breath but I will keep pressing the issue. The same group does a Marie Curtis cleanup in September and I’m sure at the least we could piggyback some garbage pickup then if we could get a few volunteers to bag some garbage.

Good work man. The don is saturated with trash too. I’ve put in a couple of pick up days and have seen huge hauls come out of small areas. Feel like I’m due for a pick up. If it hasn’t been posted I’d love to know when/if there is a city organized pick up day – mainly cause I want to make sure the city is able to get out the bags instead of them just sitting by the trail for weeks.

@allantats and @jcitizen as general rule of thumb you can always call 311 (within the City limits) and let them know about garbage issues or a need for pick up. Believe it or not there is actually a dedicated ‘squad’ for removing garbage from Ravines. By calling 311 with areas in need of clean ups the City can put in a work order with the Ravine clean up crew.

Similarly, if you have collected a heap of trash in bags while out on the trails and have left them, say next to a garbage receptacle at a park or parking lot, you can call 311 to let them know and they should dispatch someone to come and pick it up.

There is a Marie Curtis Park community cleanup day happening Sunday May 15th 9-12pm. Hosted by TRCA.
I was thinking of doing a small cleanup on the trail around the Queensway bridge where the homeless dudes hang out.
I have the organizers contact info and I’m sure we could leave the bags on the Queensway itself for them to pick up.
Would only be for a couple of hours.
Any takers, let me know and we’ll sort it out.

    Thanks,
    Al

Last week I managed to do some garbage cleanup on the east side of the creek between Burnamthorpe and the metal stairs.
Looks like a bit of a party spot (due to easy access, I guess).
Looks better but I ran out of time…
I may try to hit the east side right around Dundas sometime soon.

Hey @allantats, thanks for your ongoing efforts! I would be happy to lend a hand.

Not sure what your schedule is like but I have tried to reserve Tuesday nights for some trail love. Let me know.

Fiester, weekdays are a little difficult for me due to shift work.
I can’t make the weekday rides for a couple of weeks but hope to make one or two closer to the end of the month.
We can talk about some cleanup etc. after we hook up for a ride. lol
