    Hi,

This is my first year embarking on what Iā€™m sure will be an incredible 2 day journey to raise money for cancer research. While I had considered the ride in the past, the idea of raising $2500 to secure my spot seemed daunting. This year however the journey is a very personal one. In December 2013 my dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer. My dad, who the very same week he was diagnosed, retired from a distinguished 44-year career at Princess Margaret. A career in which he devoted his time to treating cancer patients and dedicated countless hours to research (http://www.uhn.ca/corporate/News/Pages/hans_messner_tribute_story.aspx). The irony was not lost on any of us, but it just goes to show that cancer can hit anyone at any time.

My dad has been a long-time ride participant and avid cyclist who spends hours every summer training on the hills of Haliburton. His dream has always been to complete the ride with all four of his children at his side. So in the early days of the diagnosis, feeling lost, and not knowing how to help or what to do, we knew that the one thing we could do, was ride.

The good news is that after a couple of surgeries to remove the cancer, my dad is doing well. He is back training on his bike and I have no doubt that my sisters and I will all ride alongside him in June.
It is never far from our minds however, that the rate of recurrence with bladder cancer is high and that this is a battle he will likely fight for the rest of his life. So this year, for my dad and all the other patients who are fighting the same battle, I will embrace the fundraising challenge.

Contribute to this history-making event with a donation. Funds raised in The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

Please visit my personal page and make a donation today:

All of the money raised is immediately invested by the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in life-saving research and care. Cancer has touched too many families and taken too many lives already. We need to take action against this disease.

    Thanks for your support!

Great cause and good luck. I support two neighborhood riders who are both cancer survivors.

Growing up, my neighbor and good family friend was Dr. Meakin, former Chief of Staff at Princess Margaret, your Dad more than likely knows him well.
