Hey @downhillmike, I have no experience but a lot of affection for Motown. I’d help you!

(Interesting to know it’s one of the older trails, along with Dr Quads. Which are the other old ones?)

[Which are the newer, besides 5Play?]

I hope Motown wasn’t wrecked by the rain today; I’d like to pay a visit this week!

@jcitizen, where’s the new line you’re referring to? And what did the “PD” at the end of Bunny Run refer to?

Does anyone know the conditions of trails today? Not sure how much rain Toronto got yesterday

Everything was fantastic this morning! Be careful if you’re riding KnuckleShredder (aka “The Flats”)… that washed out bit near the east end has gotten quite narrow and could put you in the river if you’re hauling ass.

Noticed some fresh work here and there… thanks builders!

    Hey man,

When heading north on Motown about 1/3 of the way up you dip down to the tracks, then back up probably the biggest climb on that trail, right after there are switchbacks down and some little jumps etc. Recently a new alt line was cut going down, bypassing the switchbacks. it’s fun and feels like a good point to turn around as after that Motown gets a bit tedious for me in the jungly months.

@jcitizen, thanks – I’ll check that out. Maybe I’m mistaken, but I think there’s a line you can take from the bottom of the switched descent you mention that bypasses the jungle/tree maze entirely. It cuts straight across the lower meadow and drops into ‘phase three’, a more deciduous forest with nice, wide lateral switches for a bit before dumping out at the rail fence beside the river. That section is where I first got your ‘look where you want to go’ advice working for me; it’s never overgrown and has very satisfying flow. I like your idea of the turnaround point, but you might enjoy the final bit.

To keep this on topic, I’ll say the weather was damn good today so I’m hoping to ride Motown tomorrow! 😉

    Just a heads up…

Looks like the homeless guy has moved back down the river to his old spot to the by the riverside Boo trail. His camp doesn’t look as big compared to previous years. I didn’t see him when I went by this morning.

Just beat the rain; the vague menace of it hanging over my head, combined with the underlying and ongoing high standard of maintenance, produced my best ride all season. Wasn’t just me. I passed a guy on 5play that was just bustin’ at how ‘awesome!’ this trail he’d just discovered was. re the shortcut on motown I had already had half a notion to go looking for just such a thing on my next trip to the east, glad to hear it’s actually there!

Man, some days just work out. Motown was awesome! The entire tree maze is trimmed and navigable, and fast — if you want to ride it that way; if you’d rather go slow, see if you can spot the abandoned insole — I mean, it’s at least as fun as The Flats, if you’re gonna ride something horizontal. The bugs were at low ebb. The mudruts are almost dried up. C’mon!

@jcitizen, I saw the new line you’re talking about, straight-shot parabola down the pitch and up the other side with some rock armor along the way, right? I thought that was a means for momentum climbing back through the switches! At any rate: to skip the tree maze, you have to descend via the switches, then stay right and you’ll go straight across the low meadow, a short wooden bridge, some rocks and then literally through a looming forest portal into dim, speedy phase 3.

There’s definitely been some tender maintenance. Motown thanks the trail angels of Harlem!

Is he being agressive towards people or just minding his business?

I haven’t seen the homeless guy yet this year. I run Boo and Bunny quite regularly so I’ll let you all know if he’s a problem.

I went for a ride around 6 30 pm today and it was pretty muddy. The switcbacks near the poop factory or the loblaws climb not sure if that is the right name but its one of the longer climbs in that area were super sketchy. I started sliding backwards and could barely stand on my two feet. Thats how slipery it was. I will get some kind of a bushwacker next week and cut down some vegetation in the flats. I used to like to take them back to Pottery rd when it starts getting dark but now its just brutal.

Dirt Farm got a haircut, should be a little nicer riding through there without the vines trying to wrap you up and suck you in.

Loblaws to 4Play via Party Atmosphere, then back south on the east side via Climax, Boo & Bunny has some wet patches but is generally good to go.
