One of my friends is a pretty good cross rider and wants to ride some Don trails this fall. Aside from Crothers /The Ridge, I am curious about opinions on what other trails are good on a CX bike? Motown seems like it might be too twisty and Catalyst/PA too technical, but as I have no experience on that type of bike, I don’t really know.

Motown would be fine, STD would be good, Training Loop is a good choice also.

You can ride any trail in the Don on most any bike, just need the right line and speed to safely navigate.

…goes without saying, you need extra skills to ride CX in the Don. Some people (a few) ride CX bikes all the time, on all trails and ride them better than most. Others break bones on CX bikes.

To rewrite Cracker’s words, the Don can, and will, break your bones regardless of which bike you ride.

Thanks, gents. An East Loop is a good call and good to know Motown would unlikely be too frustrating.

Haha. I am pretty sure that he has never owned a bike without drop bars.

I’ve done a few seasons in there on the CX bike, when I was bored with the trail rig.

Most of the trails are ok to ride. Motown does have some holes (errrr, ‘whoops’) that could destroy a light wheel and it’s tight meandering nature means it’ll be a chore on the CX bike. The rest are fine. Cat and PA are fine too. Skid and I rode those trails in the winter as well and the CX bike stood up just fine, albeit significantly slower in the turns. Ultimately the Don is pretty mellow compared to the rest of the world.

Only downside is flats. bring some tubes if not running tubeless.

    No problem.

And when I say bring tubes, I mean, a few tubes 😉

Thanks again for the tips. The ride was great – after the ridge, took the Boo trail and Gundy up to Foreplay before heading back to Training Loop/Boomerang. Good new is we did not need those tubes, but bad news is that the steerer tube of his “cheap” carbon fork cracked on the Bog Connector. We walked it out, and the front end collapsed when the steerer snapped a few minutes later. Yikes! So the East trails will need to wait until next time.
